Ohio is among the first to challenge the drug companies.
“They knew all of it was wrong and they did it anyway, unleashing a health care crisis that has unfurled far-reaching financial, social and deadly consequences for the people and families of the state of Ohio,” DeWine said.
The major claim: Companies downplayed or didn’t disclose addiction risks.
The state is suing:
- Purdue Pharma
- Endo Health Solutions
- Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and subsidiary Cephalon
- Johnson & Johnson and subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals
- Allergan, formerly known as Actavis.
Between 2011 and 2015, more than 3.8 billion doses of opioid medication were prescribed in Ohio. The complaint alleges the companies overstated the benefits and understated the risks of opioid use, and used brochures and seemingly unrelated third parties and front groups to push information contrary to scientific evidence.
